BOOK REVIEW: Camouflage by Joe Haldeman

CamouflageCamouflage by Joe Haldeman
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Due to the fact that this book won the Nebula Award for best novel in 2006, it was quite high up on my to-read list. I don't know what the reasoning was behind why it won that prestigious award, but it didn't seem all that great to me. The story was interesting enough, but certainly not what I'd call noteworthy.

The story follows a couple of different ancient aliens that came to earth many, many years ago and had no knowledge of each other. They have both long since forgotten their origins. One of them spends most of its life as various sea creatures until taking on human form, whereas the other has always been (and can only present itself as) a human. The first one develops a real desire for knowledge and learning about what it is to be a human. The second one is pretty keen on causing pain and suffering as it cruises through life as varying sorts of bastard.

Meanwhile, an unusual object has been found on the ocean floor near Tonga in the Pacific that is somehow related to one or both of these aliens. Both of them set about trying to discover what the truth behind this mysterious object is in the hope that they may learn about their own origins and purpose. They only learn of the existence of each other quite late in the story.

It's a good tale with a nice human side to the story, but no real meat to it. There is a climax of sorts at the end, but nothing terribly exciting. I really respect Joe Haldeman as a writer, but couldn't really connect with this one.

An okay book, but only just.

BOOK REVIEW: The Human Division by John Scalzi

The Human DivisionThe Human Division by John Scalzi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

You probably can't find too many bigger fans of John Scalzi's Old Man's War universe books than me, so this was a very eagerly awaited book. I was looking forward to a decent yarn from Scalzi after the disappointment I felt with Redshirts, and the other OMW universe books are all awesome.

The story picks up after the events of The Last Colony and the galactic situation that we were left with there. I liked the main characters and, as always, really enjoyed Scalzi's wit and casual sarcasm that comes through in the dialogue. The pace of the story was good, but I thought the action could have been ramped up a little.

The ending is really good, but there is, strangely, no real conclusion to the events of the story. I found this slightly disappointing, but I can only assume that there is further volumes to come, which is more than okay. I can hardly wait.

There are some really neat chapters. I particularly enjoyed the one where Harry Wilson rescues an ambassador's dog that had been swallowed by a plant and got a dead king's crown attached to it. Quite humorous.

A typically good Scalzi OMW universe story that I really enjoyed. It loses a star from me for being a little light in the action stakes but get's it back for the excellent characters and dialogue.

Well worth reading.

BOOK REVIEW: Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, January 2013

Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine (January 2013, Volume 37, No. 1)Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine by Sheila Williams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Asimov's and also it's sister publication Analog. Short fiction is where it's at for me at this point in my life where it's harder to commit to longer novels, and my attention span isn't as long as it could be.

I really rate this publication and others like it. Watch out for more reviews of this sort of thing from me.

BOOK: Robert Silverberg - Short Story Compilation

Robert Silverberg is a prolific American author and editor, best known for writing science fiction. He is a multiple winner of both Hugo and Nebula Awards, a member of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, a Grand Master of SF.

His short stories are some of the best ever written. Click HERE for a great compilation in epub format produced by ShellDrake, a keen fan.

Compiler's Notes:
This is far from a complete anthology of the works of Mr. Silverberg (and his 50+ pseudonyms) since 1954.
This compilation has not been proofed and perhaps some ardent fan(s) will undertake to correct and add to this compilation creating a version 2. The most notable problem is paragraphs broken into more parts than the original, although the underlying markup could use some cleaning too.
The works are presented chronologically, as best as possible.
Any commentary (Introductions, forewords, afterwords, and editorial) have been removed in the interest of minimizing file size. Some may have been missed...
References to original publishing refers to the English language version, some stories were published in other languages prior to being published in English. No guarantee about the accuracy of this information is implied.

BOOK REVIEW: Engineman - Eric Brown

EnginemanEngineman by Eric Brown
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I haven't read a book by Eric Brown that I haven't enjoyed and this was another example. It seemed to start off a little slowly initially, but ramped up sufficiently to a nice pace that wasn't overly fast, either, but comfortable. The ending came on a little too fast, though, and I seem to remember feeling like this about Penumbra, another of Brown's books. The story was also slightly light on action, for me. Still good, but a bit more would've earned it another point.

The guts of the story is really good, although I never really felt that I 'got' the concept of the Engineman's mind pushing the ships through the void of the Nada-continuum. However, it all fitted together well and came together nicely at the end. I liked how the worn-out Enginemen that we first meet finish the story having reached fulfilment and happiness. Nice.

I did like all of the characters, and reckon that this is one of Brown's strengths - believable characters. The human side to the story (as well as the alien side) was warm and touching without being too much, and I'm a reader that can be turned off by an excess of that sort of thing.

Overall a good book.
